About This Video

This may be the most innovative pack I’ve seen in years, and I’m saying that as someone who’s reviewed a lot of backpacks and started to believe they’re basically all the same. Most packs fall into two camps: the traditional internal-frame “pockets everywhere” style, or the ultralight “bag with straps” roll-top style. But on a rainy 4-day trip in the Pacific Northwest (where I got completely soaked and my lens fogged up), I put this Aarn pack through real conditions and came back wanting to give it the attention it deserves. The most obvious feature is the pair of huge front pouches called balance bags. The idea is to move small-but-heavy items forward so you’re not compensating by leaning into the load all day. What surprised me is how these carry more like worn weight—yeah, “ultralight snobs” like me call it worn weight, and critics call it cheating—but it genuinely feels different on your body when the weight isn’t all hanging off your back. The real reason I like this pack, though, is the suspension. Aarn took the concept of a moving hip belt and went further with a system that’s independent from the pack so your body can bend, sway, and flex without fighting the load. It takes more fiddling than what I’m used to, but you can adjust it while wearing it, and the hip belt details (including the looped dual straps and the unique clip) are small things that make a big difference over a long day.
