But in this video I break down the problem that comes with big box retail (and honestly, the whole wholesale model): it rewards what already sells and punishes real risk. If you’re a big brand, you don’t want to gamble on a weird new design if retailers won’t buy it. And if you’re a retailer staring at years of sales data, you’re going to reorder the same “safe” stuff. That loop is why backpacks, sleeping bags, and tents often feel like the same product with tiny tweaks year after year. So I focus on where innovation actually comes from: small brands that don’t have name recognition to lean on, so they have to solve real problems to get noticed. I cover three examples I think are genuinely pushing backpacking gear forward. First is Aarn Packs—most people fixate on the balance bags, but to me the truly interesting part is the suspension system and how independently it moves, plus the adjustable torso and unique hipbelt. Then I talk Zenbivy, because they’ve blended the best parts of a sleeping bag and a quilt into a system that lets me toss and turn without drafts, while still feeling more like my bed at home.
