About This Video

I’m out at Appalachian Trail Days again—thousands of thru-hikers in one place—so I did what I always do: walked around, looked at real trail-worn gear, and asked the question I’m dying to know… what’s the biggest mistake thru-hikers make? Along the way I talked to hikers like Hershey Squirts (yes, that’s his name), Ratatouille, Taco Cat, and Zen about what’s actually working, what’s failing, and what they wish they’d done differently—especially early in a long hike. The big theme I kept hearing was: don’t rush the first few weeks. Pushing too many miles too early, with too much weight, is a fast track to overuse injuries and getting pulled off trail. The other lesson was just as important—don’t let other people tell you how to hike. If rain pants work for you, wear them. If a quilt doesn’t work for you, don’t force it. And if you’re a weekend warrior, the best advice was simple: set your gear up in the backyard, make your mistakes where it’s safe, then get out there and learn by doing. We also ran into real problems like leaky sleeping pads and wet packs—and I was able to connect a couple hikers with brands at Trail Days to get them taken care of. That’s the cool part about this event: you get honest feedback from the trail, and you get to see the gear industry show up for hikers.
