Most of the time I’m filming on a big, expensive interchangeable-lens camera—great image quality, but it’s also bulky and honestly kind of vulnerable (I’ve had to replace mine three times). In this video, Insta360 challenged me to make one of my regular videos using only the Insta360 X5, and I was genuinely curious if a tiny 360 camera could deliver footage that feels “pro” without all the hassle. To give the test some structure, I walk through one of the systems I lean on when I’m out shooting: the nine-shot rule for getting B-roll that actually edits together into a story. I break down why B-roll matters, what an establishing shot is, and why I’ve moved away from drones—noise, legal red tape, and the fact they’re banned in national parks and wilderness areas. The X5 with a long selfie stick can fake that floating “drone” look, and the big upgrade here is quality: 8K resolution, a larger sensor, 13.5 stops of dynamic range, and AI processing aimed at cleaner footage and better low light. I also show how 360 lets me pull wide, medium, and close-up angles from the same clip in post, plus how AI reframing makes editing less of a keyframe nightmare. Finally, I test audio (built-in wind reduction vs my lapel mic) and cover practical features like replaceable lenses, fast charging, long battery life, and waterproofing to 49 feet.
