About This Video

I’m in Cascade Locks, Oregon—2,146 miles into the Pacific Crest Trail—at PCT Days, surrounded by people who’ve been out here for four or five months and have already walked more miles than most of us will in a lifetime. I had one question I couldn’t let go: what’s the first thing thru-hikers ditch on trail? So I walked around Tent City, grabbed hikers, and dug into their big three, what’s failing, what’s getting replaced, and what they’d never hike without. What I found is that “ditch” doesn’t always mean big-ticket gear—sometimes it’s the little stuff you swear you need at home. One hiker told me the first thing to go was rain gear (and he’s even using a solid rain jacket as a vapor barrier instead of carrying a puffy). Another ditched nail clippers, a full-size journal, and even a hairbrush after cutting her hair—classic “I need lighter” trail reality. And then there are the outliers who carry a sled through the early Sierra or climbing shoes through the late Sierra, because hiking is also supposed to be fun. We also used PCT Days to help hikers out: I worked with brands to get a better-fitting pack to a hiker whose pack just wasn’t working, replaced a sun hoodie that was causing a nasty rash, and even helped get a hiker into a new tent when his was on its last legs. That’s the best part of this community—gear talk is great, but taking care of each other is better.
