About This Video

Somehow, this gear managed to be both well-made and cheap at the same time—and that’s exactly what made me want to test it. In this video I bought a full Teton loadout with my own money (two tents, two backpacks, a sleeping pad, a sleeping bag, and a pillow) for under $800, and then I broke down where the cost-cutting is smart… and where it feels deceptively designed to fool first-time backpackers. I start with Teton’s Altos “20°” down bag, and the biggest red flag is the lack of real specs. The loft I measured is closer to what you’d expect from a much warmer-weather bag, and there’s no ISO/EN rating, no fill power, and no fill weight—so I don’t recommend it. Then I show how the Teton sleeping pad’s spot-weld design creates cold points (I even used a thermal image to show heat escaping through the welds). The tent and packs follow a similar theme: they’re durable and feature-rich for the money, but the penalty is weight and bulk. My main takeaway is you don’t have to spend a fortune to get outdoors—but you do need to know what corners are being cut, and I share similarly priced alternatives that avoid the biggest traps.
