About This Video

The largest “river” in North America isn’t the Mississippi—and in this video I explain why that statement isn’t as crazy as it sounds. I’m talking about an invisible river in the sky that starts in the Pacific Northwest, over the temperate rainforests around Olympic National Park, and may help move moisture across the continent. The idea is tied to a newer scientific theory that forests don’t just sit there and receive rain—they can help create it, and even influence wind, by acting like a biotic pump. I break down how trees move water without “lungs,” using evaporation through tiny pores in their leaves to pull water up from the ground. That process releases massive amounts of water vapor (a single big tree can dump huge volumes daily), but vapor alone isn’t rain. For rain to form, water molecules need something to cling to—rainforests provide that naturally by releasing biogenic volatile organic compounds that act like super-efficient cloud seeds. As vapor condenses, it can create low pressure that draws in more ocean moisture, which is where the “pump” really gets interesting. I also cover the twist: more pollution doesn’t automatically mean more rain. Too many impurities can create lots of tiny droplets that never get heavy enough to fall. That’s one more reason I think forests matter—they help make rain and they help clean the air while doing it.
