About This Video

Most of the time when I say “cheap gear,” people hear “low quality.” That’s not what this video is. I’m talking about inexpensive backpacking stuff that I actually use—most of it under $15—and that earns a permanent spot in my kit. I start with the little things that live in my ditty bag: toothpaste tabs (easy to measure for a trip), a tiny smelly-proof bag to keep the toothpaste smell from taking over, a sub-$1 thumb toothbrush, and a few fire sticks for the rare legal campfire or an emergency. From there I get into some of my favorite low-cost upgrades that make trail life easier. I show a tethered 3D-printed bottle cap for 28mm bottles (I reuse Smartwater bottles and like not losing the lid), plus the tube adapter I’ve used for years that gives you “bladder convenience” with bottle simplicity. I also cover a few cook-kit favorites like the Gossamer Gear Pot Pocket to keep your pot hot and hands cool, the Sea to Summit X-Cup lid trick, and snapfold bowls that pack flat. Finally, I talk repairs (NOSO patches) and data/skills tools: the Govee thermometer that logs temp/humidity to your phone, and my go-to hiking app, Natural Atlas, which I use because I genuinely like it—not just because they support the channel.
