How can an igloo keep you warm in freezing temperatures? The compact snow walls use thermodynamics to trap body heat while blocking icy winds, and the inside stays surprisingly warm due to insulation from the snow itself. About This Video

There are few things in this world that will keep you as warm as snow—and yeah, at first that sounds impossible. In this video I head out into real winter conditions and (full disclosure) I don’t build a true igloo. I build a quinzee instead, which is basically a packed snow mound that you hollow out. Different construction, same idea: use snow’s weirdly awesome insulating properties to trap heat and block wind. I break down the thermodynamics in plain trail-language: “cold” isn’t really a thing—heat is just energy from jiggling particles, and you feel cold when heat leaves your body faster than you can make it. Inside an igloo/quinzee you’re fighting radiation, convection, and conduction, and snow helps because it’s about 95% trapped air. That trapped air slows heat transfer, which is also why melting snow takes forever unless you seed it with a little water first. I also show the temp difference with my thermometers—about 37°F inside vs about 12°F outside—because a 25°F bump can be the difference between surviving and not. Add smart design (sleep platform up high, door down low) and even a small lantern, and ancient winter wisdom starts looking a lot like science.
