In this video, we’re in San Francisco for the first time on a sports trip—just us (no camper, no Chip)—and we decided to spend our sightseeing day doing Alcatraz Island. Since Alcatraz is a National Park location (and you know how we love our National Parks), we went in excited and ready to make it count, including plans to grab a Junior Ranger booklet for Zoe so we can take home a badge. I share a bunch of real-world tips from our morning out there: I bought our tickets early online (it was $45 per person), we Ubered from the hotel instead of messing with traffic/parking (two thumbs up), and you’ll definitely want to dress in layers because the boat and the island were freezing. Also—learn from us—bring wet wipes and maybe wear dark colors, because the birds on Alcatraz do not play. We also talk through the self-guided audio tour inside the prison, how you can pause and go section-by-section, and some of the coolest setups like the cells staged for different time periods and the escape-related displays (you’ll have to see those for yourself).
