About This Video

Happy New Year, everybody—this video is our “24 hours in Austin” kid-friendly day trip while we’re down in Georgetown, Texas for our annual Christmas visit with family. Every time we come down here, we try to explore a different town nearby, and this year we headed about an hour south into Austin. We started on South Congress with breakfast at Jo’s Coffee. The breakfast burritos were good but super basic (they’re pre-made, so you get what you get), but that iced Turbo coffee they’re known for? Really, really good—kind of a chocolatey mocha vibe. After that we did the South Congress walk-and-shop thing—candy shop, souvenir spots, and Allen’s Boots (beautiful, but whew… they are proud of those prices). My number one tip: get there early. We rolled in around 9:00 and had no line and easy parking, but by late morning the line was literally out into the street. Then we hit my highlight of the day: Terry Black’s BBQ. It’s intense, packed, and you need to know your order before you hit the line—but that brisket (we chose the moist side) was so good I swear they injected angels directly into it. We tried to tour the Texas State Capitol, but the entry line was massive and tours were about to end, so we enjoyed the grounds and gift shop instead. We wrapped up downtown with ice cream at The Baked Bear and some more shopping, then called it and headed back to the campground for a fire. Austin is super cute, extremely family-friendly, and there’s no way you can do it all in one day—so we’ll definitely be back.
