What up campers—on this trip we headed down to Steelville, Missouri for a big family Fourth of July weekend at The Rafting Co Campground. It’s only about 45 minutes to an hour from our house, and we were mainly there to camp, let the girls (and Chip) play by the river, and check out the campground. We ended up in Site P, a back-in grass site on gravel roads with full hookups (30 amp, water, and sewer). The sites are huge and fairly level, and we loved the wide open green space behind us—perfect for kids to run around. Now for the honest part: while our site and the river access were the highlights, the rest of the campground left something to be desired. Amenities were basically nonexistent near our loop—the bath house was locked and the closest restroom was a porta potty at the entrance. The pool looked like it’s been out of service for years. Pricing and check-in were also confusing: the website showed $20/night for full hookups, but we paid $215 for four nights, and at check-in they tried to add another $150 with no emailed receipt or proof beyond our bank charge. We did find a secluded private gravel bar through the trees that was absolutely amazing, and that (plus the big grassy site) is why we still enjoyed our stay—but until pricing and customer service improve, there are better options nearby for less money.
