About This Video

In this build I walk you through a full 110-gallon rainforest ecosystem—start to finish—aimed at poison dart frogs and the kind of “natural lives first” setup I’m always chasing. I’m laying out the whole workflow: sealing and prepping the tank, building structure with foam and cork, carving and texturing the background, and then dialing in the hardscape with manzanita so you get real height, ledges, and planting zones. The big takeaway here is that a large viv like this only works long-term if you build it like an ecosystem, not a display—function first, then aesthetics. I also go over the substrate and forest floor layers (mosses, peat, leaf litter) and why I like them for humidity stability and microfauna support. Then we get into planting—this one’s loaded with epiphytes, ferns, and mini orchids—so you can create that dense, layered look while still keeping airflow and access for maintenance. If you want a thriving vivarium (not a mold box), the details matter: clean silicone work, smart foam carving, and using the right materials in the right spots. This video is basically my full recipe for a big, mature-looking rainforest build that’s actually built to run.
