About This Video

In this build, I walk you through how I set up an emerald grass lizard (Takydromus) grow-out terrarium from the ground up—substrate, structure, and the little husbandry details that make these guys thrive. I’m a big believer in “natural lives first,” so even though this is a grow-out, I still set it up with real function in mind: lots of usable cover, climbing options, and a layout that lets the lizards feel secure while still giving me easy access for maintenance. I also touch on Exo Terra-style terrarium cleaning and general care tips as I go, because a clean, well-organized setup is half the battle with fast, flighty species like grass lizards. For the build itself I’m using coconut coir and sphagnum moss for a simple, effective base, plus branches for climbing and perching (you can buy them, but you can also source locally if you do it safely). Takydromus are seriously some of the coolest, easy-to-care-for reptiles when you give them the right structure and routine—this video is basically my playbook for getting that grow-out enclosure dialed in.
