In this video I tested a free manual transcription software that, in my opinion, is the best option for beginners who don’t want something too basic or too complicated. I compare two popular tools—oTranscribe and Express Scribe. oTranscribe is open source and super easy with a clean interface, audio controls, variable speed, and shortcut keys, but it’s missing important basics like speaker tagging. Express Scribe is powerful and professional, but it comes with so many features that you can easily feel overwhelmed unless you get proper training. Then I show you the perfect middle option: the GoTranscript Transcription Tool. You can access it from the GoTranscript website (scroll down and click “Transcription Tool”), upload your audio/video, and start working in a neat, clean editor with more working space than oTranscribe. My favorite features are speaker tagging (just hit a shortcut key), “pause while typing” (great if you’re a slow typist or doing corrections), snippets/templates for difficult words, and find-and-replace for quick cleanup like changing speaker tags or US/UK spellings. Overall, it’s a solid free tool to start manual transcription.
