About This Video

In this Cancer Chats video, I’m sharing my cancer diagnosis story—how I knew something was wrong and the exact signs and symptoms I had leading up to finding out I had lymphoma. I was an athlete in high school (varsity and club volleyball), so I was used to being active and in really good shape. After graduating in May 2019 and having a super busy summer volunteering at foster camps, I got this weird dry cough that just wouldn’t go away. I wasn’t “sick” in the normal way, but the cough lingered, and then the fatigue hit hard—like, at least one nap a day, sometimes two or three. On top of that, I started getting out of breath doing the simplest things, like walking up stairs, and I honestly thought, “Dang, am I really that out of shape?” Then my left arm started turning purple/blue and going numb when I used it a lot—doing my hair or washing it in the shower—like my circulation was getting cut off. The final moment was when I noticed a lump under my arm while doing my hair. From there it was doctor visits, tests, an echo, and then the ER, where they found a huge tumor in my chest compressing my heart. An oncologist told my family and me I had cancer, and I didn’t go home for about two weeks after that.
