In this video I share my thoughts on two new budget headphones from Jade Audio (FiiO’s sub brand): the FiiO JT3 ($70) and the FiiO JT7 ($120). I start with a quick overview of the build and accessories, and I honestly have to mention how shocked I was by how small the JT7 box is—smaller than an IEM box—because the JT7 is a foldable open-back planar. The JT3 is an open-back dynamic with angled 50mm drivers, velour pads, and dual mini-jack inputs, while the JT7 has big planar drivers, angled pads, lots of headband adjustment, and it even comes with two cables (3.5mm and 4.4mm balanced), which is pretty generous. Sound-wise, the JT3 comes across as a warm U/V-shaped tuning with punchy sub/mid-bass, but the bass isn’t the fastest and can get a bit muddy on busy tracks. The mids feel slightly recessed and veiled, and while the treble is mostly smooth, I did catch occasional peaks on things like electric guitar solos and some female vocals. The JT7, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise: highly resolving, open and organic, with fast planar transients, clean bass, strong micro-detail, and a huge, spacious soundstage that really blew me away. I also talk drivability and EQ: both are easy enough to run on a decent dongle, but the JT7 scales noticeably with higher-current sources (my DX340 in high gain made stage and separation open up). If you can stretch the extra $50, I’d personally suggest the JT7—it’s the more well-rounded, technically capable set, and for me it’s one of the best price-to-performance headphones under $200 right now.
