What Happens When You Wear Red Glasses? Color Subtraction Challenge Color Subtraction Challenge Hey, welcome back to Kids Fun Science! Today's experiment is the Color Subtraction Challenge, a fun **do it yourself** project to explore how we perceive **colors**. This engaging **science experiment** is perfect for **science for kids**, offering a hands-on way to understand basic **color theory** and the properties of light. Discover how red glasses can change your view of the world! Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:07 What you need 2:05 Red filter 2:24 experiment Made for parents and teachers. Many students have passed light through a prism, or seen a rainbow, and know that there are all different colors in the light around us. If, instead of a prism, you use a filter, it removes some wavelengths of light. A red filter will absorb all of the color wavelengths except for red - in our case, that means only red wavelengths can get through the glasses. All the other colors are stripped away/absorbed by the glasses. This is called color by subtraction. So, when you wear the red glasses and look at an object, the red glasses absorb all the color wavelengths of that object except for red. So, the less red a color is (think blues, greens), the darker it looks (because more of its wavelengths are being absorbed/subtracted). Reds, yellows and oranges look brighter Looking through these glasses is similar to what colorblind people see! We wear glasses like this for laser safety or other applications where there is a wavelength that could hurt our eyes. Careers like Laser Technician and Optometrist
