This Toy Flips Itself Upside Down??? mpossible Balancer For teachers and parents Hey, welcome back to Kids Fun Science! Today, we're exploring the incredible `tippe top` in this fun `science experiment`, demonstrating fascinating physics principles. Watch this unique toy start `spinning` and then flip upside down, providing a perfect `center of mass experiment` for `science for kids` to enjoy. Spinning the Impossible Balancer takes some practice as will only flip if it is spinning relatively fast. What does it do? The Impossible Balancer spins like a normal top before flipping upside down and spinning on its stalk. When it flips over, it begins to rotate in the opposite direction. How does it work? The Impossible Balancer may seem like a simple, ordinary top. It has been carefully designed. The most important feature is that the center of mass does not sit at the geometrical center of the top. As soon as the top begins spinning, therefore, it balances not at its center but at a point just off center. It is at this point that the top actually contacts the surface on which it spins. As a result, the top does not spin on a single point but slides in a small circle over the surface on which it spins. The friction between the impossible balancer and the surface creates a twisting force, torque, that pulls the stem downward. When the stem is horizontal, the stem itself no longer rotates. The rotation is now perpendicular to the stem. As the stem contacts the surface, it also experiences friction, which applies more torque. The torque provides the force that lifts the round mass of the top up. Remember that the rotation of the stem actually stops while it is horizontal. As it contacts the surface, its rotation angular momentum us when it was first spun, but since it is now upside down, the direction of rotation has changed.
