I did this back before I knew it could be dangerous. The large quantities of gases (H2O and CO2) produced during the rapid combustion could easily shatter a glass container. Serious accidents have occurred performing this demonstration in a glass container—do not use glass. ONLY USE A PLASTIC JUG, such as a 5-gallon water jug. This experiment is very dangerous. I would not recommend using ethanol, I have only used rubbering alcohol. • Always pour out excess liquid alcohol from the plastic jug before igniting. If any liquid alcohol is left, it will increase the amount of gaseous after burning. The liquid could also ignite, which may cause the plastic jug to melt. Always keep a lid or some sort of cover handy, which can be placed over the mouth of the jug to extinguish the flame if it begins to melt the plastic. Excess alcohol in the lip of the mouth of the jug and on the outside of the jug. Isopropyl alcohol is a highly flammable liquid and vapor. Isopropyl alcohol cause serious eye irritation. Always wear protective eyewear when performing this demonstration. Anyone viewing this demonstration should also wear eye protection. Please review current Safety Data Sheets for additional safety, handling, and disposal information. Light bottle outside. Adult Supervision is required. Never stand directly over the bottle. flames can shoot out a very long way you could get a face full of blue flame or worse, once i had a violent mix and it spat the glowing match back out of the bottle. The bottles contain a mixture of air and rubbering alcohol, and the varying concentrations of rubbering alcohol determine the speed and intensity of the reaction. I use a Glass 5 gallon Alhambra bottle. Usually can only do it 3 times before it gets to hot, that is why I have 2 bottles. : ) WHAT YOU NEED: Glass bottle 1 or 5 gallon Rubbering Alcohol 70% Long lighter STEPS: 1) Pour a small amount of fuel(rubbering alcohol) into the bottle. You want 1/2 cm to 1 cm of liquid in the bottom of the bottle. (Just enough to cover the bottom). 2) Cap the bottle or cover the top with your hand, whichever works. Shake the bottle. 3) If you get rubbering alcohol on the lip of the bottle, wipe it off or blow on the bottle to evaporate the rubbing alcohol. Otherwise, the flame will just burn at the neck of the bottle. If if just burns at the neck just cover the top and the flame will go out. 4) Carefully light the vapor just inside the mouth of the bottle. 5) The flame should go out on its own, but if it does not, simply cover the mouth of the bottle and suffocate the flame. 6) Each time you redo this experiment remember, it uses up the oxygen in the bottle, which the fire needs in order to burn. You will need to put fresh air into the bottle. You can blow into the bottle, like I did in the video. You probably will not need to add more fuel. Just add air, cover and shake the bottle again, and light the vapor. Remember the bottle will get hot after each experiment! This is fire. It can burn you! Perform this project under competent adult supervision. Only use rubbing alcohol. Keep rubbing alcohol away from lighter.
