When I broke the toothpick in the middle, the wood fragments inside are compress. Once I added water to the broken part, capillary action causes the water to be absorbed into the toothpicks. The water moves inside the dry toothpick from the starting point of the crack and continues along the length to the pointed tips. The capillary action or water traveling inside the toothpick causes the toothpicks to straighten out. The toothpick will continue to straighten out until the coin falls into the bottle. Tips: Do not use a coin that can not fit into the bottle. When you break the toothpick , it has to be connected., but bend in half.
