Maple Leaf Glows Under Laser | Cool Science Demonstrations Maple Leaf Laser Pointer Experiment (Canadian Maple leaf laser) made for teachers and parents Hey, welcome back to Kids Fun Science! Today, we're doing a cool **science experiment** to see if **money** is real or **counterfeit** using a **laser** and a phone app. Kids will learn how to be a real **money detector** by spotting hidden features on bills. Made for parents and teachers. The primary reason for the change in material from cotton paper to polymer is security. The security features of the new notes include many improvements, but the one I’m going to show you is the holography, which is hidden in the frosted maple leaf window. A hologram is an image that appears to be three dimensional and which can be seen with the naked eye. Holography is the science and practice of making holograms. Typically, a hologram is a photographic recording of a light field, rather than an image formed by a lens. If you shine a laser pointer through the center of the maple leaf that features on all the bank notes, the projected image will show the value the currency! The polymer is has a Environmental Impact whereby the polymer notes demonstrated significant environmental benefits over cotton notes, sometimes as much as a 30% improvement. The new polymer notes will last an estimated 2.5 times longer than cotton notes, which will decrease the total number of notes required. New notes are recyclable and once a note is taken out of circulation, it will be shredded and converted into plastic pellets, which will then be used to make everyday plastic items like lawn furniture. Switching to US bills, I found this app called EyeNote it was developed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for those with visual impairment to help increase accessibility. The app will scan the note and verbally announce the denomination of all US paper currency (in either English or Spanish), as well as whether it is the front or back of the note (to assist when paying at automated vending machines).
