It’s been seven months since my last Japanese progress update, so in this one I’m basically doing an honest audit of what’s been going wrong—and why I can’t just “polyglot my way out of it.” The main issue isn’t that Japanese is impossible, or that I don’t know what to do in theory. It’s that my routine has been inconsistent, my study has lacked a clear strategy, and I’ve been relying too much on vague immersion instead of making sure I’m actually understanding and retaining what I’m seeing. I talk through the unsexy stuff: motivation dips, real-life priorities, and how easy it is to drift when you don’t have a plan you can repeat daily. Then I lay out how I’m going to fix it—by balancing structured study (especially grammar and targeted practice) with casual immersion, instead of pretending immersion alone will magically carry me.
