Making the Weather in British Politics - Professor Sir Vernon Bogdanor CBE "Making the Weather: Six Politicians Who Changed Modern Britain" is the story of six post-war British politicians, all of whom exerted an outsized influence on the political life of the UK; an influence greater than that of most prime ministers. It includes three from the political Left – Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, Roy Jenkins, and Tony Benn – and three from the political Right – Enoch Powell, Keith Joseph, and Nigel Farage. Each study is a fascinating analysis that examines how these men achieved such prominence and influence and how, though very different figures in many ways, they came to dominate the political landscape, often for a period of years. Vernon Bogdanor is a political scientist and historian, and one of Britain's foremost constitutional experts. He is a research professor at the Centre for British Politics and Government, King's College London and Emeritus Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Oxford, where he taught for many years. He was knighted in 2023. Vernon's many other honours include: Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of the British Academy and Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences. Vernon has written widely on government and politics. His most recent books include The Strange Survival of Liberal Britain: Politics and Power Before the First World War (2022), which upends the orthodoxy about the decadent Edwardians, and Making the Weather (2024) on six influential post war politicians. He is a frequent contributor to TV, radio and the press and was awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies by the Political Studies Association.
