Today Sony dropped the new 50-150mm f/2 GM, and yeah—it looks cool, it’s a great lens, and I get why people are hyped. But I’ve got some problems with it, mostly because it lives in this weird niche pocket where I keep asking: why are you doing this, Sony? In this video I put it head-to-head with the lens I actually use all the time—the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II—which is about $1,000 cheaper and, in my opinion, way more versatile for most shooters. I walk through the practical differences: focal range (70–200 still wins for flexibility), f/2 vs f/2.8 (yes, f/2 is a real stop of light), and a big one—image stabilization. The 70-200 has OSS and the 50-150 doesn’t, which matters a lot once you’re living near 150mm unless your camera has IBIS. I also talk close-focus and magnification, filter size (95mm vs 77mm), weight, and why internal zoom on both is great. The dealbreaker for me is versatility per dollar: the 70-200 takes teleconverters and the 50-150 doesn’t. For wildlife, trade shows, or doc work on an FX6 rig, that flexibility is huge. At $3,898, the 50-150 starts feeling like a flex lens—meanwhile I’m sitting here begging for something like a 24-105 f/2.8 (or 28-105) built for real video work.
