About This Video

In this video I’m testing the Shimbol TP Mini wireless monitoring system—basically a tiny HDMI TX/RX pair that lets you send your camera feed to a monitor without running a cable. Shimbol sent it over for me to demo, go over the fit and finish, and give you my honest opinion after using it on a couple real jobs. It’s HDMI-only (no SDI), which is totally fine for a lot of Sony A-series setups and even cameras like the FX6/FX9 as long as you’re working off HDMI. What I like most is how fast it is to get running. You plug it in, power it up, and it just works—no fiddling. They claim up to 500 feet and “zero latency,” and in my testing it’s been super responsive in real time. For me, the biggest win is client monitoring: instead of people hovering over my shoulder, I can hand them a monitor and let them watch the shot as we’re rolling. At $89, it’s a really easy entry point into wireless video. My main gripe is power: I wish these had internal rechargeable batteries (or even AA options) plus a battery indicator, because relying on NP-F or USB power is a little annoying. But for the money, it’s hard to argue with how convenient this is on set.
