Today I’m dialing in white balance on the Sony FX6 without guessing, because mixed lighting is where things get messy fast. In this setup I’ve got daylight coming in, a key light that’s supposed to be around 5400K, and practicals in the background down around 3200K-ish—so if you just pick a preset and pray, you’re going to fight tint and weird hues later. I walk through the tools I actually use on real shoots: a gray card/white card, a ColorChecker, and a simple “fill-the-frame” approach to get a consistent baseline. The big thing I’m showing is how I use a phone app (Cine WB / “Kev white balance”) to measure Kelvin and tint when I don’t have a $2,500 color meter. Then I compare three FX6 approaches: app-based Kelvin+tint, a proper custom white balance using a card (the most accurate, just slower), and a straight Kelvin preset with no other adjustment. In Resolve, I check the cards, use the picker, and you’ll see they land surprisingly close—often within ~200K—so the takeaway is: get close in-camera, shoot a reference card, and you’ll save yourself a nightmare in post.
