Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 44 I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj0pNzEmvM_qHHMTkWNXKzUd_0BADQL0a This video is just an end of the year- “I am too busy with school to make a tutorial” video! I set up my camera to catch the process I went through to make a commission of bowls for our local retiring teachers in the district where we live and my husband teaches. I started with 5 lbs for each bowl, (that clay, btw was VERY stiff- hence the multiple coning I went through to center) I rounded the interior of each piece when I opened to keep the interior round without a corner. I created a flange as well, by supporting the (wet) outside of the wall with my hand while I flattened the flange with a tool. Once leatherhard, I trimmed on my Giffin Grip. Once trimmed, I applied the underglaze to the flange, and transferred my text with a stylus. When I had difficulty seeing my lines with the stylus, I dusted the underglaze with cornstarch, and traced. This made a visible imprint in the cornstarch I could carve. Once carved, I bisque fired, then glazed using Coyote clear on the underglaze flange, then Coyote Brick Red (a little less than two quarts with 2 tsp added black Mason Stain) It gave me a perfect school color maroon. Once glazed, I fired to cone 5 with a 25 minute hold. I do highly recommend checking out your local ceramic suppliers… mine is Cornell Studio Supply in Dayton (937) 454-0357 https://cornellstudiosupply.com/ They are super helpful if you call them directly- they ship all over! (if you call them, tell them I sent you!) Check out this link to a live searchable Google Doc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! (also some non-amazon suggestions on here!) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XbYPQjjJnHrQG5xyWGMHZkEcZj5N8VnUAbFZdJRrRmU/edit?usp=sharing You can also check out my Amazon Influencer Store Here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/karanspotsandglass I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 21 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students! Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
