This video is possible with the generosity of the UK company, Pott’r which sent me several of their tools to try out for videos! In this video, I am using their centering aids. I give my unbiased review of the tools at the end of the video but let me cut to the chase for you here. #1 These are not a replacement for learning how to center, they are an aide to help people understand it, and get the principles of it. I still feel VERY strongly about teaching people the basics of the physics of centering! #2 They really do work- I was impressed!!! #3 They might be a very helpful aide for students that struggle to center, or maybe students with physical limitations of strength or arm/hand control. Be sure to check out the Pott’r Website! You’ll find all sorts of cool tools- including their patent pending centring aids!! https://pottr.co.uk/pages/pottr-centering-aids?srsltid=AfmBOoqHBk4c3bC7JUP77A8YLjrnxSMX7rqsy975tY9HC96bYoY5hs5S For the great tools I recommend check out this link to a live searchable (control F) Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XbYPQjjJnHrQG5xyWGMHZkEcZj5N8VnUAbFZdJRrRmU/edit?usp=sharing I made this video because Pott’r sent me their pieces to use and review. I hope that this video and these centering aides might help people that need assistance centering, and aren’t quite getting it. I usually tell my students to try 5 different sessions to learn to center, if at the end of that, they are still struggling, I would introduce these. So, this is designed to lessen their struggle- while still learning and having success. I am a former public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay since the late 80’s at Miami University (of Ohio!) and I taught clay for 35 years! I loved teaching my students, but now I am LOVING making my own pottery (and traveling!) in my retirement. I still present workshops in clay and will start traveling for presentations in 2026!! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for art fairs and my Etsy site; https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass I started my Youtube channel several years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students! Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
