This video is intended for teachers or someone who wants to mix up a lowfire iron oxide. This is what I use for my Ceramics I Themed Coil Pots in lieu of traditional glaze- (as glaze obscures much of the detail) Here is a list of a playlist of all the videos in the Ceramics I Themed Coil Forms: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj0pNzEmvM_rnYfK7AzsXqYWt2W1tcXyn In this video, I mix up a lowfire black iron oxide. I use the Frit 3195 - which is for lowfire temperatures. You can use a highfire frit for a highfire application. I purchased my frit locally from Cornell Studio Supply in Dayton Ohio. They are awesome- Here is their contact info: (937) 454-0357 cornellstudiosupply@gmail.com https://cornellstudiosupply.com/ I use a respirator in the video to avoid breathing in any of the dust from the powders as I am mixing. I do normally mix my dry ingredients outside, however, it was storming at the time, and I just needed to get it done inside. Here is a link to a respirator similar to mine: Respirator for Dust- must be well fitting- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XW3ZS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=karanspotsand-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0009XW3ZS&linkId=ab376cda7795d70547ed0923a64cdc81 The two powdered ingredients are FRIT 3195 and Black Iron Oxide. Below are the links from Cornell’s website: https://cornellstudiosupply.com/product/frit-3195-1lb/ https://cornellstudiosupply.com/product/black-iron-oxide-1lb/ I am using about a 1:1 ratio of the oxide and frit- but have done as much as 2x the oxide as the frit. It must sit for 24 hours to really absorb, and then if after that time it looks weak, I can add more oxide and mix. Ultimately, it should look like you have dipped a piece in india ink. We are using Standard 103 clay for this exercise. It is lowfire and grogless red earthenware.
