This video is preparing my Ceramics I kids to glaze their small slab-box exercise. This is only the second time they will be using our stoneware glazes in the semester. These boxes are an exercise for my Ceramics I kids, where they learn the basics of slab building with tar paper before they move on to their larger firm slab projects. I demonstrate to my students how they can Pour, Dip, Brush, or Bulb Syringe their designs on their slab boxes. The idea is they can experiment on these small boxes and try out their glaze technique they will use on their big piece before they glaze it. For more detail on the Bulb syringe method, please check out the glazing the plate video here: https://youtu.be/vmuNLto2p7Y If you would like to see the videos on the construction process of the boxes the links are below: Practice Slab Boxes: https://youtu.be/eumib36t60k More elaborate Slab Forms: Day one: Building the Slab Form with Tar Paper: https://youtu.be/PThlHsQhZ7E Day two: Cleaning the Leatherhard Slab form and removing the tar paper: https://youtu.be/vHKupITpcjc Here are links to all the slab box videos we use in our Pandora’s Box Project: Practice Slab Box Skillbuilders: https://youtu.be/eumib36t60k Creating the Construction Paper Models for the boxes: https://youtu.be/nc_FNIfC2zs Forming Enclosed Slab Boxes in Clay Using Tar Paper: https://youtu.be/PqWf2zJJffg Refining the Enclosed Slab Boxes- Adding our Pandora’s Box Detailing: https://youtu.be/SO-WjMUYG7o Glazing the Slab Boxes: https://youtu.be/iYiOJRFzyYY Tar paper is roofing paper ( in the US it is available at home improvement and hardware stores). I use the lighter weight- I think it might be 15 lb as opposed to the 30 lb weight. It is sold in big rolls near roofing materials. ** Note** you don’t want to use the fiberglass embedded tar paper as this is problematic in handling. In this video, we are glazing the bisque fired boxes. We use stoneware glazes (cone 5 and 6 midfire) on our Standard 153 stoneware, a nice midrange firing stoneware. I used underglazes in the carved design grooves of the boxes to keep the stoneware glazes separate when they fire. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students! Subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
