In this video I’m finally doing the kitchen project I’ve been talking about for literally a hundred years—ripping out our old island and DIY-ing a brand new one with way more cabinets, drawers, and storage that actually works for our real life. I take you along to Home Depot to show what we bought (and the prices), then I walk through it step-by-step the way my brain needs it to make sense: planning for our family’s needs, painting everything, building it out, and making it look polished instead of “obviously DIY.” I used unfinished cabinets and painted them white to save money, and I tried a paint sprayer for the first time—10/10, especially if you paint as much as I do. We added decorative wood to cover the particle board and anchor everything together, built and stained a new countertop (we used Heather Gray to match our other counters), and sealed everything with polyacrylic so it stays bright and protected. Day three is my favorite part: adding hardware, installing a pop-up outlet charging station, and organizing every drawer so the kitchen feels functional instead of cluttered. If you’ve been scared to start a home project, I’m telling you—just do it anyway. Homes are surprisingly forgiving with a little spackle, paint, and maybe a second trip to the hardware store.
