You can make a TON of progress if you just change how you look at the fretboard. You can "hear" your way around it in a way that will make it easier for you to play more interesting guitar. This has always worked far better for me than the CAGED system. Also, it's going to get a bit controversial. Embrace it. And enjoy! About This Video

Good morning, my friends. In this video I’m talking about the “cheat code” that lets me find anything on the fretboard instantly—and it has way more to do with hearing than it does with memorizing shapes. I’m not thinking CAGED “Tetris blocks,” and I’m definitely not thinking, “What mode can I flap over this?” I’m thinking anchor notes, intervals, and chord function. If I know where my “one” is everywhere on the neck, I can build triads, seventh chords, and real-world voicings from that spot in any position. I also get a little controversial (embrace it): melody is king. The melody tells you what home base is, and the chords underneath are doing jobs relative to that home base—even if they’re not diatonic. Just because you throw a chord under a melody that could suggest some other framework doesn’t mean we “left the key.” This way of hearing and labeling (numbers, not letters) is exactly why transposing, alternate tunings (I’m down a half step here), and session-style problem-solving get way easier. When you can see the relationships, it’s like reading the matrix.
