You practice. You practice a lot. You learned scales. Modes. Arpeggios. So why is your playing still kind of stale or even boring to you? Might I humbly suggest its because scale playing and other pattern-based approaches to the guitar are not conducive to playing something interesting. You'll enjoy your playing more if you adjust your approach like this... About This Video

Good afternoon, my friends. In this video I’m basically handing you a bitter pill: if your whole practice life is “scales, modes, patterns,” there’s a good chance that’s exactly why your playing still feels kind of stale. I’m a Nashville session guitarist, and the way I survive in the real world is not by finding one mode that fits everything—it’s by getting inside the changes. For me, everything is chords. Harmony first. Melody and counter-melody second. Scales are way downstream from that. I walk through a progression that intentionally derails the “one scale over the whole thing” approach—because of that secondary dominant (that C#7 pulling hard to F#m). That one chord introduces a note outside the key and it exposes the problem with what I call the “one mode fits all flappery of the fingers.” Instead, I show how I’m thinking chord tones: third of this chord, flat seven of that chord, flat third of the next chord, and so on. My goal is that if you mute the progression, you can still hear what the chords are from the melody I’m playing. Once you truly hear and target chord tones, then you earn the right to play tension, hold “wrong” notes longer, and create a bigger payoff on the release. That’s the stuff that makes people want to call you for sessions.
