This video is me resurrecting one of my all-time favorite Utah trips from April 2021—back when I met Rob from Riv Overland for the first time, plus Jeremy and Adam from TrailRax. I shot most of it on an iPhone 12 Pro while I was mid-switch from Canon to Sony, and that “budget ND filter” absolutely punished me with overexposure, weird color, and that nasty X-pattern error. At the time I thought I’d ruined it, but with better editing chops now, I wanted to give the footage new life because the trip itself was too good to leave on a hard drive. We run the San Rafael Swell and link up a “Utah greatest hits” kind of route—rock ledges, sandy washes, bentonite hills, moonscapes, water crossings, and the kind of prehistoric views that make you forget you’re tired. I talk tire size vs approach/departure angles, picking lines on ledges, and why knowing the rules matters (Utah closures are real). We deal with brutal wind, chase camp, stop at rock art, and I share a few hard-earned reminders about monsoons and why you don’t mess around with drones near national parks. The takeaway: imperfections make memories last longer. This trip was raw, authentic, and it became the foundation of real friendships—plus it’s a solid blueprint for planning your own Swell / Goblin Valley / Capitol Reef-style loop if you do it responsibly.
