In this episode 45, I head back out on the trap line near the end of the season to start picking up traps for the year. Traveling by snowmobile through the North Maine Woods, I check a number of sets and trail cameras that have been quietly watching the line. The trail cam footage doesn’t disappoint. Along the way we get video of fisher, weasel, pine marten, moose, flying squirrel, and mink, giving a great look at just how active the woods still are this late in the season. We were fortunate enough to connect on a fisher and a pine marten, and I also spend some time talking through the decision-making process that comes with late-season trapping—what traps to pull, what to leave a little longer, and when it’s time to fully wrap things up for the year. This episode is a real look at end-of-season trapping in northern Maine, the wildlife that shares the woods, and the choices that come with running a trap line as winter starts to tighten its grip.
