Have you ever looked at a beautiful landscape and wondered how to capture that magical feeling of depth? In today’s watercolor demonstration, I’m taking you into the studio to paint a misty valley scene, focusing on how to make your hills "melt" into the sky and capture true atmosphere. This tutorial is designed for beginner to intermediate artists. I’ll show you my "down-to-earth" approach to creating depth using simple techniques like managing wet-on-wet passages, cooling colors in the distance, and using sharp vs. soft edges to guide the viewer’s eye. In this watercolor lesson, you will learn: * Paper Preparation: Why I wet the back of my paper to give myself more time to paint. * Atmospheric Color Mixing: Creating duller, cooler blues for distant hills and warmer, stronger tones for the foreground. * Soft vs. Sharp Edges: Using wet-on-wet techniques for a misty sky and "broken edges" for realistic foreground grass. * Final Details: Adding splashes of color, "bird holes" in trees, and simple shadows to bring the whole scene together. Materials Used: * Colors: Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Orange, Permanent Rose, and Cobalt Turquoise. * Brushes: Fan brush, Rigger brush, and a standard wash brush. Painting atmosphere is one of the most rewarding parts of watercolor. Let's grab our brushes and start painting!
