In this video I’m sharing a simple “mommy and me” storytime with Slumberkins’ Hammerhead—nothing wildly creative, but exactly the kind of calm, comforting read my kids genuinely love. I originally started recording these for my kids’ iPads, and I figured I’d share them here too in case you’re looking for easy read-alouds that still have a really meaningful message. Hammerhead takes place in an ocean school where everyone knows the expectations… until it’s break time and everyone wants the same thing: the kelp swings. When Hammerhead finally gets to the front of the line, Narwhal ignores him and keeps swinging, and you can feel those big feelings build fast—hot head, tingly fins, tears, and then a fight. The book walks kids through calming down with deep breaths, using words instead of hands, and repairing the friendship with a simple repeat-after-me script: “I felt mad, now I’m calm… I’m sorry I hurt you… I still want to be friends.” As a mom, I really appreciate how Slumberkins supports kids (and us) through depression and big feelings, plus they have free printable resources too.
