I get into how millennials were the first generation aggressively pushed preventative anti ageing products before we even had anything to prevent. Early 2000s magazines, teen commercials, and basically every skincare aisle told me that if I didn’t start fighting ageing immediately, I’d regret it later. It set the tone for a whole generation growing up worried about wrinkles long before they appeared. I also talk about how social media and filters made things worse. I was part of the first generation to casually edit selfies, smooth out skin, brighten eyes, and basically create a second version of myself that didn’t actually exist. Over the years that gap between the edited me and the real me got bigger, and it made ageing feel like something I had to “fix.” There’s also the whole nostalgia thing. With Y2K trends coming back, a lot of millennials (including me) ended up slipping back into the styles we loved as teens. It’s fun, but it also puts us side by side with younger people who genuinely are that age, which naturally leads to comparison. I also look at how the beauty industry changed its language over time. The harsh anti ageing claims slowly faded into softer terms like well ageing and longevity. Gen Z grew up with barrier repair, hydration, and transparency, while I was being told to prevent, correct, and basically panic. And because skincare can only do so much, a lot of millennials moved toward cosmetic treatments. Injectables became normal, cheaper, and something everyone talks about openly. They’re framed as maintenance or self care now, but they also contribute to ever rising beauty standards that are harder and harder to meet. Overall, this video breaks down how millennials ended up being the generation most afraid of ageing, why it isn’t really our fault, and how I’m trying to rethink the expectations placed on all of us by the beauty industry, social media, and old school messaging about staying young. At the end of the day, you get to age however you want. Do whatever makes you feel good about yourself, and ignore the pressure to do it a certain way. 00:00 Intro 00:45 QURE Sponsor 04:33 What Is Causing This? 06:23 FEAR AGEING! 07:45 Millennials VS Gen Z 09:14 Digital Dysmorphia 11:27 GUESS HOW OLD I AM 14:56 Y2K Nostalgia 19:33 Inject Me 23:45 Outro Instagram - james_s_welsh Unboxing Channel - @JaymesPlays1
