In this video I’m demoing and reviewing the Tubesteader Eggnog, a tube-based preamp/overdrive pedal that’s chasing those classic 1950s Fender Tweed tones. Tubesteader is a Canadian company and this is my second pedal from them (the other one I tried was the Roy, their Vox AC30-style pedal, and it seriously impressed me). The Eggnog runs a real 12AX7 and gives you a lot of control: a Normal/Bright switch to mimic the two-channel Tweed vibe, a 3-band EQ for shaping, Volume and Master (think gain vs output), plus a Boost that can really kick it over the top. I run it a few different ways so you can hear what it can do in real-world setups. First, I plug it straight into the effects loop return of my Custom Coupe 72 2x12, bypassing the amp’s preamp so the Eggnog is basically “the amp.” I play it with an ES-335 and then a Strat, switching Normal/Bright and using the EQ to show how much sculpting you can do. Then I take it direct for recording: Eggnog into a DI/interface, then into cab IRs in the DAW (I use a Bassman 4x10 IR and an 18 Champ IR) to show how convincingly it can emulate different cabinet/amp sizes. My favorite use for this pedal is direct-in recording (or live with an IR loader), because you get that classic tube goodness without lugging around something backbreaking.
