In this video I’m checking out the brand new Gretsch Electromatic Premier Jet, and I’m doing it the way I always like to: real-world tones, clean and overdriven, and a full pickup-by-pickup comparison. Huge thanks to Gretsch for sending this one over—after doing my Gretsch 101 history documentary, it was awesome to reconnect, because I genuinely love what Gretsch has been doing over the last few years. The Jet is one of those classic designs (dating back to 1953) that people sometimes pigeonhole, but it’s way more versatile than the “rockabilly box” stereotype. This Premier Jet keeps the old-school identity intact with a chambered mahogany body (super light), a bound maple top, and a bound ebony fingerboard. I also dig the slightly subdued Falcon-style headstock—it’s classy and feels like a nod to the past without being over the top. Hardware-wise you’ve got a tune-o-matic/stop tailpiece setup so you can actually intonate it properly. Tone-wise, the new Gretsch Alnico 6 “Spherisix” humbuckers are the story. In full humbucker mode I’m getting that PAF-style growl—honestly kind of Les Paul-esque. But the big surprise is the coil split: instead of the usual weak, noisy “almost single-coil,” this one gets genuinely Gretschy with that plucky, twangy thing (almost a little Dynasonic-esque). I ran it into a Rivera Venus Deux and used a One Control Shades of Green Overdrive Deluxe for drive tones so you can hear the range clearly.
