In this video I’m checking out the Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 V2, and I’ll be honest: I think a lot of people misunderstand what this thing is. It gets labeled as a “multi-effects pedal,” but it’s really a full rig—Tech 21’s SansAmp signal path right down to the speaker sim—so you can plug straight into a PA or record direct and you don’t need an app, a menu, or a million parameters to get a real, usable sound. This was a sponsored review, but I reached out because I’ve been wanting a direct option that stays out of the digital option-paralysis zone. I demo it two ways: first, direct using the speaker-emulated XLR out (what you’d send front of house), and then into my Rivera Venus D with the speaker sim switched off so you can hear how it behaves like a traditional pedalboard into an amp. I run through the Blonde-style SansAmp, the boost (with smart pre/post placement), the Plexi drive that can switch to a Cali-style voice, plus delay, reverb, tuner, and tap tempo with extra options like dotted eighths and two reverb sizes. Big takeaway: it’s small enough for a gig bag, sounds genuinely good, and it’s the kind of reliable “backup plan” I always want on a gig—especially if you just want to plug in, get a tone, and focus on playing.
