Good morning from Camp VELO—out in the Czech countryside basically on the Austria border (I can literally see where it is down the street). In this video I walk you through why this place keeps pulling me back. It’s not just “a campground,” it’s more like a purpose-built cycling compound for travelers who actually live out of their gear—bike tourists, bikepackers, recumbent and velomobile riders, hikers, and even RV folks. Even on a day that was “supposed” to be hot and clear (and ended up cold and wet… classic), the facilities here still hit the mark. I show the layout: flat, clean camping areas, power hookups (including RV-style power), warm shower building, and a restaurant that’s legitimately a destination—pizza, coffee, breakfasts, and the kind of food you want after big ride days (yes, we had fried cheese). One of my favorite details is the lockable charging lockers with power inside, so you’re not leaving expensive electronics unattended in a busy bathroom. What makes Camp VELO extra unique is the history and what’s happening on-site: it’s built on an old military barracks complex, with original structures still visible, and there’s even a massive WWII bunker being converted into a hotel. Add in the velomobile/unique cycle work happening in the warehouse, and you’ve got a cyclist-focused mecca that’s worth building a route around.
