Forget frag-packed reefs for a second... a mature reef just hits different. In this video, I visit one of my favorite public reef tanks at the Smithsonian and talk about what makes a truly mature reef feel so special. To me, this tank is such a great example of what happens when corals are allowed to become the aquascape. The colonies have had time to settle in, spread out, fight for space, and shape the reef in a way that feels natural, layered, and alive. That is the part I love most. Not just the fish, not just the color, but the actual growth form of the coral and the way the reef structure changes when you stop thinking in frags and start thinking in colonies. This is also one of the reasons I now prefer lower rockwork in my own tanks, usually only about one third to at most halfway up, so the coral has room to grow in and build the reef over time. It takes patience, but I really think the result is worth it. This tank also used to have a huge gigas clam, which is kind of my dream clam. I did not see it this time, and its absence leaves a noticeable gap in the scape. It makes me wonder what might eventually take that space. Sometimes the best reef inspiration is not the newest coral. It is seeing what happens when you let a reef become itself. #reeftank #saltwateraquarium #smithsonian #sps #coralreef #reefaquarium #aquascape 📸 FOLLOW ME: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/inappropriatereefer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inappropriatereefer Email: inappropriatereefer@gmail.com ⏰ TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 Quiet morning at the Smithsonian 00:16 A mature reef just hits different 00:24 When corals become the aquascape 00:35 Why colonies matter more than frags 01:46 The mature SPS look 01:56 Why I changed my aquascaping style 02:34 The missing gigas clam 02:59 More mature reef tank visits in the future ⚙️ GEAR USED IN THIS EPISODE: (Affiliate links help support the channel!)
