About This Video

In this episode I grabbed the DeWalt 5.0Ah PowerStack kit deal from the big L improvement store and did a quick unboxing, because I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the new “PowerStack five” for a long time. I went with the DCD998 hammer drill driver as the free tool because I wanted to see if the Power Detect-style setup is any better than what I’ve already tested. First impressions: the 5.0 PowerStack is still compact, but it’s humongous compared to the little 1.3Ah, and it’s a bit bigger than a 2.0—think compact 4-ish size with the promise of more power. Then I put the DCD998 to work in real wood with a 3/4" bit, then 1-1/4", and finally the Monster 3" self-feeder. On high gear the big 3" was a no-go, and it wouldn’t do it on speed 2 either—speed 1 is where it’ll run it, and honestly it did it very, very easily once I dropped down. After that I ran the same 3" test against my Flex 24V hammer drill with the 6.0Ah PowerStack, and while the DeWalt felt smooth and possibly lighter, the Flex felt better overall and it’s got kickback control—DeWalt basically wants you to break your wrist. Bottom line: the DeWalt DCD998 is strong, but for that brutal 3" self-feeder test, gear choice and safety features matter.
