About This Video

It’s been a few months, so I figured it was time to do a proper homelab rack update. The whole redesign basically started because I accidentally bought a full-size StarTech rack—long story short, I was browsing for deals, I lowballed a listing on eBay expecting a counter, and I woke up to “your order is in.” It showed up brand new in the box and ended up being cheaper (and better) than the sketchy used rack I almost bought locally. Now I’ve got a ton more room to space things out and actually lay the rack out the way I want. In this video I walk top-to-bottom through the rack: patch panels, my HP 2920 PoE+ core switch doing inter-VLAN routing, and where I’m headed next with fiber and a dedicated 10Gb switch (I’m leaning MikroTik). I also cover my new pfSense box in a 1U Supermicro build, mainly because my ISP’s ONT wants to negotiate 2.5Gb—an annoyingly odd speed—so I moved to an Intel X520-T2 that properly handles 1/2.5/5/10Gb. Then I get into my Proxmox rebuild with ZFS everywhere, NVMe mirrored for VM storage, Tesla P4s for Blue Iris and Plex transcoding, and the Chia farm (because for me it’s still a hobby). Finally, I show the power setup with APC transfer switches so I can flip the rack between grid and off-grid solar without running UPSes.
