About This Video

In this video I’m breaking down the different dachshund sizes and answering the question I keep getting lately: “Is Stanley a mini or a standard?” If you’ve seen my recent videos or Instagram, you’ve probably noticed Stanley is already bigger than Stella—even though Stella is almost 3 and Stanley is only 6 months. Stella sits around 8.5–9 lbs, and Stanley is about 13.5 lbs (almost 14 the last time I weighed him), and he’s not even done growing yet. I explain the two common sizes—miniature and standard—and then the in-between “informal” size a lot of people call a tweenie. Minis are typically 12 lbs or less, standards are usually 16–32 lbs, and that 12–16 lb range is where tweenies tend to land (not quite mini, not quite standard). I also share Stanley’s background: one parent is 100% mini and the other is half mini/half standard, which makes Stanley about 1/4 standard and 3/4 mini. My biggest takeaway: if you want a true mini, make sure neither parent has standard mixed in—and if you’re hoping for a tweenie, look for a litter with some standard mix or choose the biggest puppy. My guess right now is Stanley may end up around 16 lbs, but we’ll see!
