This talk provides a brief overview of Andrew Chadwick's book The Hybrid Media System: Politics and Power (Oxford University Press). The hybrid media system is built upon interactions among older and newer media—their technologies, genres, norms, behaviors, and organizations. Actors in this system are articulated by complex and evolving power relations based upon adaptation and interdependence. The concept of hybridity allows for accounts of political communication that map where the distinctions between newer and older media matter—and where they do not. Andrew Chadwick is Professor of Political Science in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he founded the New Political Communication Unit in 2007. He has authored numerous publications in the field of digital media and political communication, including the award-winning book Internet Politics: States, Citizens, and New Communication Technologies (2006).
