On September 22, 2017, Holberg Laureates Stephen Greenblatt and Manuel Castells met at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cambridge, MA, to discuss the status and importance of research in the social sciences and the humanities, from the perspective of their respective disciplines. Stephen Greenblatt is John Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Mauel Castell is a sociologist, whose positions include University Professor and Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, and Honorary Fellow of St John’s College, University of Cambridge. The conversation was moderated by journalist and poet Eliza Griswold.
