In this first look at the Snapmaker U1, I’m basically doing what I always do when a new “multi-color king” shows up: unbox it, get it printing, and see if the marketing survives a few dozen hours of real use. The headline feature is Snapmaker’s four-head SnapSwap system, and my early takeaway is that the color changes are legitimately fast, the waste is low, and the multi-color results came out cleaner and crisper than I expected for a first-run experience. I also walk through the setup process and the overall “out of the box” experience, because with machines like this, the first hour matters almost as much as the first print. I cover print speed, build volume, enclosure design, the built-in camera, and the Klipper-based feature set—plus how the U1 feels compared to the obvious comparisons people are going to make (Bambu and Prusa). This isn’t my final verdict yet, but it’s a solid overview of what you can expect if you’re considering the U1 right now. If the early performance holds up, this could be a really interesting option for anyone who wants multi-color without the usual time and filament penalties.
